Yumeko en Conscious Hotels zetten volgende stap in verduurzaming hotelbranche

Yumeko en Conscious Hotels hebben de handen ineengeslagen voor een innovatief project om oude donzen kussens te recyclen tot nieuwe donzen kussens. Het initiatief laat consumenten en hotelpartners zien dat recycling van dons mogelijk is, met alle voordelen voor mens, dier en milieu.

DOEL
Vanuit Conscious Hotels en Yumeko is het doel van dit project om minder nieuw materiaal te gebruiken; oude producten hoeven niet altijd direct te worden vervangen, maar kunnen dienen als waardevolle grondstof om weer nieuwe producten van te maken.

Hiermee willen we consumenten en bedrijven inspireren. Yumeko en Conscious Hotels laten hiermee aan bedrijven en consumenten zien dat recycling van dons mogelijk is en veel voordelen heeft voor het milieu. Bovendien doet de kwaliteit van een gerecycled donzen product niet onder voor die van een minder duurzaam alternatief. Het feit dat Yumeko’s gerecyclede donzen dekbed in 2021 en 2024 als ‘Beste uit de Test’ kwam bij de Consumentenbond laat dit nog maar eens zien.

Wij vinden dat de samenleving moet opschuiven naar een circulaire economie, waarin materialen van hoge kwaliteit kunnen worden hergebruikt voor een beter doel dan eindigen op een stortplaats of een verbrandingsoven. Wij geloven dat dit een grote bijdrage levert aan de verduurzaming van de samenleving.

IMPACT
Het recyclen van dons heeft verschillende voordelen:

Lagere milieu-impact
Qua milieu-impact worden er geen waardevolle materialen toegevoegd aan het afval, die normaliter zouden verdwijnen in een verbrandingsoven waar veel CO₂ bij vrijkomt.
Geen productie van nieuw materiaal
Daarnaast hoeft er geen nieuw materiaal te worden geproduceerd. Door gebruikt dons te recyclen blijft een waardevolle grondstof in gebruik, in plaats van dat het vernietigd wordt.
Dons besparen
Bovendien zorgt recycling ervoor dat het niet nodig is om dons afkomstig van nieuwe dieren te gebruiken.
Goedkoper
En ook niet onbelangrijk: voor Conscious Hotels was dit een mooie business case omdat het recyclen van donzen kussens ook financieel interessant is.

Door samen te werken aan dit dons recycle project hebben Yumeko en Conscious Hotels samen een grote, positieve slagkracht. Samen dragen we bij aan een duurzaam, circulair model waarbij grondstoffen niet worden uitgeput en reststoffen opnieuw worden gebruikt.

DONS- EN MATRAS RECYCLE SERVICE
Yumeko heeft twee recycleservices in het leven geroepen. Een dons-recycleservice en een matras-recycleservice. Via de dons-recycleservice kunnen klanten die een aankoop doen hun gebruikte donzen kussens en dekbedden kosteloos verzenden. Yumeko maakt er dan weer nieuwe dekbedden en kussens van.

Via de matras-recycle service worden de verschillende onderdelen van het matras gescheiden. Zo gaan het katoen van de tijken en het metaal van de pocketveren respectievelijk naar de textiel- en metaalindustrie. De verschillende soorten schuim – zoals latex en polyether – worden van elkaar gescheiden en worden opnieuw gebruikt als opvulmateriaal of isolatiemateriaal.

PRODUCTIEPROCES
Al het dons dat terechtkomt bij de dons-recycleservice van Yumeko wordt zorgvuldig gekeurd, geselecteerd en gewassen. Er kunnen dan kussens (en dekbedden) van worden gemaakt die net zo mooi zijn en exact zo zacht en warm slapen als producten met nieuw dons. Niet alleen het dons wordt gerecycled, maar ook de 100% biologisch katoenen hoes (ofwel tijk). Deze gaat naar een textielverwerker, die daar weer mee aan de slag kan.

LANGDURIGE SAMENWERKING
Yumeko en eco hotelketen Conscious Hotels hebben beide een missie om de wereld mooier te maken. Sinds 2014 maken gasten op de vier locaties van Conscious Hotels gebruik van duurzame donzen dekbedden en kussens van Yumeko.

Ook in 2021 was er behoefte aan nieuwe kussens voor twee van de locaties. Maar wat te doen met de oude? Vanuit hun duurzame visie wilde Conscious Hotels de te vervangen Yumeko kussens een nieuwe bestemming geven. Daarom kwam Yumeko met het idee om deze te recyclen via haar dons-recycledienst.

Bij Conscious Hotel The Tire Station zijn in februari 2022 nieuwe Yumeko kussens van verantwoord dons geleverd. Alle oude kussens van deze locatie werden via de recycleservice van Yumeko gerecycled. Van het gerecyclede eendendons zijn vervolgens voor Conscious Hotel Westerpark nieuwe kussens gemaakt.

Yumeko and Conscious hotels are taking the next step in making the hotel industry more sustainable

Yumeko and Conscious Hotels have teamed up for an innovative project to recycle old down pillows into new down pillows. The initiative also shows consumers and hotel partners that recycling down is possible, with all the benefits for people, animals and the environment.

PURPOSE
From Conscious Hotels and Yumeko, the goal of this project is to use less new material; old products do not always need to be replaced immediately, but can serve as valuable raw materials to make new products again. Yumeko and Conscious Hotels are thus demonstrating to companies and consumers that recycling down is possible and has many advantages for people, the environment and animals. Moreover, the quality of a recycled down product is no less than that of a less sustainable alternative. The fact that Yumeko's recycled down comforter came out as "Best in Test" in 2021 from the Consumers' Association shows this once again.

We believe that society must move toward a circular economy, where high-quality materials can be reused for a better purpose than ending up in a landfill or incinerator. We believe this is a great contribution to making society more sustainable. Good example will follow.

IMPACT
Recycling down has several advantages:
•In terms of environmental impact, no valuable materials are added to the waste, which would normally disappear into an incinerator that releases a lot of CO₂.
•In addition, no new material needs to be produced. Recycling used down keeps a valuable resource in use, rather than destroying it.
•In addition, recycling ensures that it is not necessary to use down derived from new animals.
•Last but not least, this was an interesting financial business case for Conscious Hotels.

By working together on this down recycling project, Yumeko and Conscious Hotels are having a great, positive impact together. Together, we are contributing to a sustainable, circular model where raw materials are not depleted and residues are reused.

DOWN AND MATTRESS RECYCLING SERVICE
Yumeko has created two recycling services. A down recycling service and a mattress recycling service. Through the down recycling service, customers who make a purchase can ship their used down pillows and comforters free of charge. Yumeko then turns them into new comforters and pillows. Through the mattress recycling service, the different parts of the mattress are separated. For example, the cotton of the tickings and the metal of the pocket springs go to the textile and metal industries respectively. The different types of foam – such as latex and polyether – are separated and reused as padding or insulation material.

PRODUCTION PROCESS
All down that ends up at Yumeko's down recycling service is carefully inspected, selected and washed. It can then be used to make pillows and duvets that are just as beautiful and just as soft and warm to sleep in as products made with new down. Not only is the down recycled, but also the 100% organic cotton cover (or ticking). This goes to a textile processor, who can work with it again.

LONG-TERM COLLABORATION
Sustainable bed and bathwear brand Yumeko and eco hotel chain Conscious Hotels both have a mission to make the world a more beautiful place. Since 2014, guests at Conscious Hotels' four locations have been using sustainable down comforters and pillows from Yumeko.
Conscious Hotels replaces all down pillows every few years and purchases new ones from Yumeko. Also in 2021, there was a need for new cushions for one of the locations. But what to do with the old ones? Based on their sustainable vision, Conscious Hotels wanted to give the Yumeko pillows that were to be replaced a new use. Therefore, Yumeko came up with the idea of recycling them through our down recycling service.

At Conscious Hotel The Tire Station, new Yumeko pillows made of responsible down were delivered in February 2022. All old pillows from this location were recycled through Yumeko's recycling service. The recycled duck down was then used to make new pillows for Conscious Hotel Westerpark. A total of 880 pillows have already been recycled with this project.
